Kentucky Tunes Winter Music School

The Cowan Creek Mountain Music School invites you to participate in our upcoming online Kentucky Tunes Winter Music School. We are offering a variety of classes and levels, and during the 12-week session, you will:

  1. Learn essential tunes from the Eastern Kentucky repertoire using the call-and-response method. You’ll start each one slowly, by learning the bones of the tune, and finish with style points and embellishments to take your playing to the next level.
  2. Discover more about some of the key mountain players who have influenced generations of Kentucky Music.Connect with Kentucky’s finest teachers and tradition-bearers and find out how you can learn more from them in the future!
  3. Have a chance to connect with your teacher, ask questions, meet other players in your class, and even lead a tune for practice

Based in a small Appalachian community just outside Whitesburg, Kentucky, our annual summer program features “music FROM the mountains, IN the mountains.” Our emphasis is on offering East Kentucky repertoire brought to you by Kentucky teachers who are deeply involved in our local music community. Now we’re expanding our offerings to include an online winter course, offered at an incredible price thanks to The Berea College Appalachian Fund and University of Kentucky Healthcare.

The BCAF was established through a gift from Herbert Faber and Ruth McGurk Faber. Since 1950, the Fund has supported nonprofits working to improve the general education, health and physical well being of people living in the Appalachian Mountains.

Classes will be held on the Zoom platform, and each will be one hour per week. You’ll also receive links to watch a recording of the class later, so you can continue to learn.

Go grab an instrument and meet us by the pot-belly wood stove to get a little taste of Kentucky no matter where you are!

A note from the director, Carla Gover…

I’ve spent my life playing, teaching, and celebrating the deep musical and cultural heritage of my home in Appalachia. Now, as the Artistic Director of Cowan Creek Mountain Music School, I’m so pleased to be able to share this music with the world, as it was so generously shared with all of us by the pickers who came before us. Generosity and community are two enduring Appalachian values, and you’ll find both aplenty when you attend a CCMMS event, whether in-person or online. I hope you can join us for this special session of jamming, community, and fellowship, even if we have to be socially-distant while we do it!
